Community

Our Community Services Projects

Truly, the Wheelchair Mavericks epitomize the successful integration of persons with disabilities into professional careers, competitive sports, and the community. This has been, and continues to be, achieved through the excellent partnerships and collaborations forged with our major sponsors!

Public SpeakingDuring our numerous public speaking engagements and other community service activities made by the Wheelchair Mavericks our affiliation with our sponsors is emphasized. The Wheelchair Mavericks are proud to support national, regional and area community service activities. During the 2003 – 2004 season the members of the Wheelchair Mavericks performed a number of community awareness activities.

Wheelchair Mavericks:
The Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks won their fifth National Wheelchair Basketball Association (NWBA) Championship in March 2003. From 1996-1997 to 1999-2000, the Wheelchair Mavericks won four straight national championships. In addition to a stellar competitive record the Wheelchair Mavericks are mindful of the responsibility every elite team has to support the community of which they are a part. Members of the Mavericks undertake a variety of community support activities including supporting the NBA Mavericks "adopt-a-school" program. With this program Wheelchair Mavericks players visit area schools to spread a message of tolerance and understanding that emphasizes the Mavericks motto that it is "ability and not disability that counts". The Dallas Wheelchair Mavericks have been affiliated with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks since the early 80s. Prior to 1982, the Wheelchair Mavericks were the Dallas Raiders, a local team formed by two Armed Forces Veterans who had lost their legs in the Vietnam conflict.

The NBA Mavericks adopt schools from traditionally under resourced school districts, primarily in the Dallas and Fort Worth areas. The NBA Mavericks request participation from the Wheelchair Mavericks when appropriate. The Wheelchair Mavericks have participated in the Adopt-A-School program for more than 7 years and anticipate being part of the replacement program.
